Railroad Service Report Update – Dec ’19
Weekly service report updates for Class 1 railroads provided by the Surface Transportation Board (STB) were recently updated with values spanning through the end of Nov ’19. Overall, total cars online declined to a five year low level, however grain and ethanol rail transportation speeds remained higher on a YOY basis.
Total Railcars Online:
- Nov 30th week ending total railcars online totaled 995,000, finishing 0.4% below the previous week and remaining lower on a YOY basis for the 55th consecutive week, finishing down 2.9%. Total railcars online declined to a five year low level, overall.
- Nov 30th week ending average train speeds for grain transportation finished higher on a YOY basis for the 38th consecutive week. Nov 30th week ending grain train speeds of 23.7 MPH finished 3.7% higher YOY and 6.0% above historical average grain train speeds.
- Nov 30th week ending average train speeds for ethanol transportation finished higher on a YOY basis for the 49th time in the past 51 weeks. Nov 30th week ending ethanol train speeds of 24.2 MPH finished 4.0% higher YOY and 6.3% above historical average ethanol train speeds.
