Railroad Service Report Update – Feb ’20
Weekly service report updates for Class 1 railroads provided by the Surface Transportation Board (STB) were recently updated with values spanning through the end of Jan ’20. Overall, total cars online remained lower on a YOY basis for the 64th consecutive week, however grain and ethanol rail transportation speeds remained higher on a YOY basis.
Total Railcars Online:
- Feb 1st week ending total railcars online totaled 993,600, finishing 0.1% above the previous week but remaining lower on a YOY basis for the 64th consecutive week, finishing down 3.7%.
- Feb 1st week ending average train speeds for grain transportation finished higher on a YOY basis for the 47th consecutive week. Feb 1st week ending grain train speeds of 23.9 MPH finished 6.5% higher YOY and 6.6% above historical average grain train speeds.
- Feb 1st week ending average train speeds for ethanol transportation finished higher on a YOY basis for the 30th consecutive week. Feb 1st week ending ethanol train speeds of 24.3 MPH finished 7.8% higher YOY and 6.3% above historical average ethanol train speeds.
