Railroad Service Report Update – Mar ’20
Weekly service report updates for Class 1 railroads provided by the Surface Transportation Board (STB) were recently updated with values spanning through the end of Feb ’20. Overall, total cars online remained lower on a YOY basis for the 68th consecutive week, however grain and ethanol rail transportation speeds remained higher on a YOY basis.
Total Railcars Online:
Feb 29th week ending total railcars online totaled 992,400, finishing 0.1% below the previous week. Total railcars online remained lower on a YOY basis for the 68th consecutive week, finishing down 4.0%.
Grain Rail Transportation:
Feb 29th week ending grain train speeds of 23.3 MPH finished 8.2% higher YOY and 3.8% above historical average grain train speeds. The YOY increase in grain train speeds was the 51st experienced in a row.
Ethanol Rail Transportation:
Feb 29th week ending ethanol train speeds of 22.5 MPH finished 1.8% higher YOY but 1.3% below historical average ethanol train speeds. The YOY increase in ethanol train speeds was the 34th experienced in a row.
