U.S. Cattle & Hogs Production Update – Jun ’20
Executive Summary
U.S. cattle & hog production figures provided by the USDA were recently updated with values spanning through May ’20. Highlights from the updated report include:
- May ’20 U.S. commercial red meat production rebounded from the 14 year low level experienced throughout the previous month but remained 12.2% lower on a YOY basis, reaching a ten year seasonal low level.
- U.S. pork production declined 9.7% on a YOY basis during May ’20, reaching a two and a half year low level, overall. The total number of hogs slaughtered declined 11.5% YOY throughout the month, more than offsetting a 2.4% increase in average weights/head.
- May ’20 U.S. beef production rebounded from the 27 year low level experienced throughout the previous month but remained 14.5% lower on a YOY basis, reaching a 27 year seasonal low level. The total number of cattle slaughtered declined 17.3% YOY throughout the month, more than offsetting a 3.9% increase in average weights/head.
