Railroad Service Report Update – Oct ’20
Weekly service report updates for Class 1 railroads provided by the Surface Transportation Board (STB) were recently updated with values spanning through the end of Sep ’20. Total cars online have declined slightly from the five month high level experienced during early September but remained above the May ’20 record low levels. Grain rail transportation speeds remained higher on a YOY basis for the 79th time in the past 81 weeks however ethanol rail transportation speeds finished below previous year levels for the tenth time in the past 13 weeks.
Total Railcars Online:
Sep 26th week ending total railcars online totaled 968,000, finishing 0.4% above the previous week but remaining below the five month high level experienced throughout the first week of September. Sep 26th week ending total railcars online finished 2.9% above the record low level throughout the second week of May. Online railcar figures have been compiled since the fourth quarter of 2014. Total railcars online remained lower on a YOY basis for the 98th consecutive week, however, finishing down 4.2%.
Grain Rail Transportation:
Sep 26th week ending grain train speeds of 23.5 MPH finished 1.5% higher YOY and 4.0% above historical average grain train speeds. The YOY increase in grain train speeds was the 79th experienced throughout the past 81 weeks.
Ethanol Rail Transportation:
Sep 26th week ending ethanol train speeds of 23.8 MPH finished 0.1% below previous year levels but remained 2.8% above historical average ethanol train speeds. The YOY decline in ethanol train speeds was the tenth experienced throughout the past 13 weeks.
