EU-28 – U.S. Milk Production Comparison – Jun 16
The EU-28 is at the forefront of the global dairy oversupply situation as production growth continues to outpace that of other major dairy exporting regions. It is valuable to put EU-28 milk production levels by member states in perspective by comparing total production levels, milk per cow productivity and milk cow herd sizes to those of U.S. states.
The EU-28 produced over one and a half times as much milk as the United States throughout the ’15-’16 milk production season as lower per cow productivity was more than offset by a milk cow herd that is over two and a half times as large as the U.S. herd. The EU-28 milk cow herd is expected to decline marginally throughout 2016 however if advances in milk per cow yields continue at recently experienced growth rates, EU-28 milk production volumes will continue to grow within the post quota environment.
