U.S. Dairy Cow Inventory Update – Jul ’18
According to USDA’s semiannual cattle inventory report, the U.S. dairy cow herd finished flat on a YOY basis throughout the first half of 2018, remaining at a 23 year seasonal high. The total milk cow herd stood at 9.40 million head as of July 1st, 2018.
Total milk heifer replacements of 4.20 million head also remained flat with the previous year, remaining at a 29 year high seasonal level. The Jul ’18 heifer replacements per milk cow figure of 0.447 finished flat YOY, slightly below the 2015 and 2016 levels but 0.9% above ten year average figures.
