Western production rebounded from three straight months of YOY milk production declines, with aggregate milk production in California, Idaho, Washington and Oregon up 2.0% YOY. Western milk production continues to trail production levels obtained earlier in the year. Production gains continue to be led by Texas, which posted an 8.3% YOY gain.
Jun ’14 milk production declined by 1.3% MOM, but was up slightly MOM when normalized on a ten year average seasonality index as the U.S. dairy herd continues to expand. The number of milk cows on farms increased by 11,000 head in Jun ’14, to 9,266,000 total head, the highest figure since Apr ’12. The U.S. dairy herd increased for the seventh straight month in Jun ’14, increasing a combined 68,000 head over the period. The number of milk cows on farms and milk per cow yield numbers were not available from Mar ’13 – Jun ’13 due to government sequestration so no YOY analysis is available.
