U.S. Dairy Cow Slaughter Update – Jun ’15
According to USDA, May ’15 U.S. dairy cow slaughter of 214,000 head was up 2.1% YOY but down 14.7% MOM on a daily average basis as slaughter rates continue to decline seasonally. The monthly YOY increase in dairy cow slaughter was the sixth experienced in a row after 14 consecutive monthly YOY declines were experienced from Oct ’13 until Nov ’14.
Despite the continued YOY increases in dairy cow slaughter, the number of dairy cows on farms continued to expand in May ‘15. The U.S. milk cow herd increased 3,000 head in May ’15 vs. the Apr ’15 revised figure to 9,310,000 total head, 58,000 head more than May of last year.
MOM declines in dairy cow slaughter were led by Standard Federal Region 9 (Arizona, California, Hawaii and Nevada), followed by Standard Federal Region 5 (Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio and Wisconsin) and Standard Federal Region 3 (Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia). No MOM increases in slaughter were exhibited during May ’15.
YOY declines in dairy cow slaughter were led by Standard Federal Region 5 (Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio and Wisconsin) while YOY increases in dairy cow slaughter were exhibited in Standard Federal Region 6 (Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas), Standard Federal Region 4 (Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee) and Standard Federal Region 9 (Arizona, California, Hawaii and Nevada).
