U.S. Dairy Cow Slaughter Update – Dec ’15
According to USDA, Nov ’15 U.S. dairy cow slaughter of 230,300 head declined 7.2% MOM on a daily average basis but remained higher YOY, finishing up 5.7%. U.S. dairy cow slaughter rates have declined seasonally by an average of 6.8% MOM on a daily average basis from October – November over the past three years.
The monthly YOY increase in dairy cow slaughter was the 11th experienced in the past 12 months. Despite the recent increase in slaughter rates, the U.S. milk cow herd held steady MOM during Nov ’15. The U.S. milk cow herd currently stands at 9,313,000 head, which remains 29,000 head more than November of last year.
The most significant MOM decrease in dairy cow slaughter was exhibited in Standard Federal Region 5 (Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio and Wisconsin), followed by Standard Federal Region 3 (Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia). No MOM increases in dairy cow slaughter were exhibited throughout the month.
The largest YOY increase in dairy cow slaughter was exhibited in Standard Federal Region 5 (Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio and Wisconsin), followed by Standard Federal Region 9 (Arizona, California, Hawaii and Nevada). No YOY decreases in dairy cow slaughter were exhibited throughout the month.
Dairy cow slaughter rates declined 6.7% MOM on a daily average basis but increased 13.3% YOY within Standard Federal Region 5 (Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio and Wisconsin). The YOY increase in dairy cow slaughter exhibited within Standard Federal Region 5 was the largest experienced in the past three years on a percentage basis. Slaughter figures for Standard Federal Region 5 were withheld throughout 2013 in order to avoid disclosing data for individual operations.
Dairy cow slaughter declined 4.1% MOM on a daily average basis within Standard Federal Region 9 (Arizona, California, Hawaii and Nevada), however slaughter continued to increase YOY, finishing up 6.3%. Dairy cow slaughter has increased YOY for 12 consecutive months within Standard Federal Region 9 through Nov ’15.
