Winter Storm Goliath’s Impact on the U.S. Dairy Industry…
Winter Storm Goliath hit New Mexico and the Texas Panhandle in late Dec ’15, resulting in heavy death losses in addition to stress and fatigue on the region’s dairy cows. Combined milk production within New Mexico and Texas declined by 5.7% year-over-year throughout the three month period affected by Winter Storm Goliath.
Lower per cow productivity may continue be experienced within New Mexico and Texas during coming months, however the small relative percentage of total U.S. milk produced within the two states, coupled with continued growth in other major production areas, will likely result in a minimal effect on total U.S. milk production levels going forward.
