U.S. Winter Wheat Seedings Update – Jan ’17
According to USDA’s annual winter wheat seedings report, seedings fell on a YOY basis for the fourth consecutive year during 2017. 2017 winter wheat seedings of 32.4 million acres finished 3.8 million acres, or 10.4%, below the previous year figure, reaching the lowest figure experienced on record. National winter wheat seeding figures have been compiled since 1960.
Winter wheat seedings were led by Kansas (7.4 million acres), followed by Texas (4.5 million acres) and Oklahoma (4.5 million acres). The aforementioned states combined to account for over half of the total U.S. winter wheat seedings.
The largest YOY declines in winter wheat seedings were experienced throughout Kansas (-1.1 million acres), Texas (-500,000 acres) and Oklahoma (-500,000 acres). Oklahoma winter wheat seedings reached a 60 year low, finishing 12.9% below the previous year.
