Railroad Service Report Update – Sep ’19
Weekly service report updates for Class 1 railroads provided by the Surface Transportation Board (STB) were recently updated with values spanning through the end of Aug ’19. Overall, total cars online finished lower on a YOY basis for the 42nd consecutive week, reaching a two and a half year level, overall, while grain and ethanol rail transportation speeds remained higher on a YOY basis.
Total Railcars Online:
- Aug 31st week ending total railcars online totaled 1.018 million, finishing 0.3% below the previous week and reaching a two and a half year low level, overall. Total railcars online remained lower on a YOY basis for the 42nd consecutive week, finishing down 2.8%.
- Aug 31st week ending average train speeds for grain transportation finished higher on a YOY basis for the 25th consecutive week. Aug 31st week ending grain train speeds of 22.4 MPH finished 5.6% higher YOY and 0.4% above historical average grain train speeds.
- Aug 31st week ending average train speeds for ethanol transportation finished higher on a YOY basis for the 36th time in the past 38 weeks. Aug 31st week ending ethanol train speeds of 22.2 MPH finished 5.1% higher YOY but remained 2.5% below historical average ethanol train speeds.
