Railroad Service Report Update – Nov ’19
Weekly service report updates for Class 1 railroads provided by the Surface Transportation Board (STB) were recently updated with values spanning through the end of Oct ’19. Overall, total cars online declined to a 39 month low level, however grain and ethanol rail transportation speeds remained higher on a YOY basis.
Total Railcars Online:
- Nov 2nd week ending total railcars online totaled 1.005 million, finishing 0.1% below the previous week and remaining lower on a YOY basis for the 51st consecutive week, finishing down 3.7%. Total railcars online declined to a 39 month low level, overall, while the YOY decline in total railcars online was the largest experienced throughout the past 46 months.
- Nov 2nd week ending average train speeds for grain transportation finished higher on a YOY basis for the 34th consecutive week. Nov 2nd week ending grain train speeds of 23.5 MPH finished 9.5% higher YOY and 5.0% above historical average grain train speeds.
- Nov 2nd week ending average train speeds for ethanol transportation finished higher on a YOY basis for the 45th time in the past 47 weeks. Nov 2nd week ending ethanol train speeds of 22.8 MPH finished 1.5% higher YOY and 0.1% above historical average ethanol train speeds.
