Railroad Service Report Update – May ’20
Weekly service report updates for Class 1 railroads provided by the Surface Transportation Board (STB) were recently updated with values spanning through the end of Apr ’20. Overall, total cars online declined to the lowest week level on record, however grain and ethanol rail transportation speeds remained higher on a YOY basis.
Total Railcars Online:
May 2nd week ending total railcars online totaled 951,900, finishing 0.3% below the previous week and reaching the lowest weekly figure on record for the fifth consecutive week. Total railcars online remained lower on a YOY basis for the 77th consecutive week, finishing down 7.8%. The YOY decline in total railcars online was the largest on record. Figures have been compiled since the fourth quarter of 2014.
Grain Rail Transportation:
May 2nd week ending grain train speeds of 24.8 MPH finished 9.5% higher YOY and 10.1% above historical average grain train speeds. The YOY increase in grain train speeds was the 60th experienced in a row.
Ethanol Rail Transportation:
May 2nd week ending ethanol train speeds of 25.1 MPH finished 7.6% higher YOY and 9.6% above historical average ethanol train speeds. The YOY increase in ethanol train speeds was the 42nd experienced throughout the past 43 weeks.
